Different Types of Cabs on Trucks

If you’re in the market for purchasing a new truck, it goes without saying that there are so many different options available to you. Buying a pickup truck is both an important decision as well as an exciting decision, so it is worth doing some research to make sure the one you get meets your specific needs, so you can enjoy it for many years to come.

One important factor to consider before buying your truck is its overall cab size. Before we go into specifics of truck cab sizes, we’ll first answer the question: what is the cab of a truck?

What is a Truck Cab?

A truck cab refers to the inside space of a truck where the driver and passenger(s) seat. The cabin of a truck typically features air conditioning, a sound system, ergonomic sets and more. There are two main types of truck cabs, available in either 2-door models or 4-door models. We will go through the specifics of the types of pickup trucks and truck cab sizes below, including the pros and cons for each.

Truck Cab Sizes

Regular Cab Pickup Truck

A regular cab pickup truck, also referred to as a standard cab pickup truck, has two standard-hinged doors with a single row of seats. In many regular cab pickup trucks, the single row of seats can fit three passengers relatively comfortably. One model within the regular cab pickup is an Access cab, which allows access to the small area behind the single row of seats for extra storage.

  • Pros: Regular cab pickup trucks are the smallest truck cab option, making it the least expensive out of the three truck cab size options. People may opt to buy a regular cab pickup truck over a crew cab or extended cab if they live in or near a city. If you plan to use your truck for daily commutes and live near towns or cities, a regular cab might be a good option for you because it will be easier to navigate narrow city roads.

  • Cons: The obvious limitation to regular truck cabs is the limited size. Because it only allows for three passengers, it will not be a good option if you have a large family or plan to use it for large group trips or vacations. Another limitation to consider is when (or if) it comes time to sell your truck. Typically extended and crew cab sizes are favored over regular cab sizes. So, we recommend getting a regular cab pickup truck if you plan to use it for a long time.

Extended Cab Pickup Trucks

Extended cab pickup trucks, also referred to as a King Cab, or Super Cab, have two rows of seats. These can either come in two-door models or four-door models. With the two-door model, passengers that sit in the rear seats will have to enter through the front door. With the four-door seats, the rear doors are smaller than the standard front doors. The main difference between crew cab and extended cab pickup trucks is that the extended cab back seat is smaller and less spacious than the crew cab models.

  • Pros: The extended cab is usually a great option for truck owners that need to carry both people and cargo around on a frequent basis, because it has 5 trucks seats while also offering a larger truck bed. The main benefit to purchasing an extended cab over a crew cab is that is offers a spacious truck bed to haul lots of cargo to and from. Additionally, extended cabs are well-desired truck types and will be great for reselling when the time comes.

  • Cons: The biggest con to the super cab or extended cab trucks is the limited room in the back seat. This would not be an ideal car for long road trips with many passengers.

Crew Cab Pickup Trucks

A crew cab pickup truck, also referred to as a quad cab pickup, SuperCrew, or double cab (if you’re Toyota), refer to pickup trucks that have four full-size doors. These full-size doors are typically hinged like standard car doors and offer room for four to five adults. The different names are sometimes utilized by different companies to describe the type of four-door cab for branding purposes. But if you see quad cab, double cab, crew cab, SuperCrew, just know they all indicate that the truck has four full-size doors accompanied with a very spacious back seat.

  • Pros: The biggest benefit to a crew cab is the ample space it provides for your passengers. With a crew cab pickup, you will be able to enjoy 5 full seats in the car, making it great for families and trips that require you to bring many passengers along. Crew cab models were originally intended to transport people, so they are extremely comfortable and great for extended trips.

  • Cons: One main difference between a crew cab and an extended cab is that the truck bed of a crew cab is smaller than that of the extended cab. Crew cabs are not ideal for truck owners that need to haul a lot of items around to different job sites, because the cargo space will be more limited. Additionally, due to their large size, crew cabs can sometimes be difficult to navigate on narrow roads and may not be the best choice for inner cities where there can be complicated turns and a lot of traffic. If you’re already experienced in piloting large trucks, this might not be as big of a concern to you. Another con to crew cabs is that they are generally the most expensive out of the truck cab size options.

Mega Cab Pickups

The Mega Cab pickup, also referred to as the CrewMax pickup (by Toyota), is the largest type of truck you can own out of all the pickup truck types. The Mega Cab or Crew Cab is a larger version of the standard crew cab, because it offers more storage space behind the second row of seats to transport additional cargo.

How to Choose the Best Truck Cab?

If you are armed with truck cab size research, your search for a pickup truck will be a whole lot easier. The best type of truck cab for your vehicle will simply depend on what you plan to use your pickup for on a day to day basis. When you are able to assess your pickup truck needs based on your family size, job requirements, and budget, you will be able to make the best decision on which truck will be best for you.
